“Even if you’re an experienced sound designer prone to steer away from presets, there’s a lot to be learned from backwards engineering these patches. The layout and organization is inspiring let alone the quality, flexibility, functionality and expressiveness of the sounds and modulation schemes. I’m looking forward to more genius in future releases from contortDistort but for the mean time remain content knowing that I’ve got heaps more to explore with Echoes in the Aether.”

Out now: Echoes in the Aether for Absynth 5

contortDistort announces the release of Echoes in the Aether, a new library of 52 new patches, 494 macro patches, and 64 new samples for Absynth 5.

Echoes in the Aether is a unique and creative library of sounds that includes:

-Airy and smooth to rhythmic and complex pads
-Soft pulsing leads to massive grooving bass sounds
-Eerie to serene, otherworldly soundscapes
-Edgy and raw synth sounds
-Uniquely processed drums

Each of the 52 sounds comes with a variety of macro patches, which are additional sounds that were created by using only the macro controls of the performance page. Macro patches give you a glimpse to what is possible with the macro controls of a patch and provides the availability of immediate variation. The setup and layout of the controls allow for a wide amount of variation and exploration.

Absynth was another synthesizer that I did sound design for in the early days of my sound design career, which at that time was Absynth 3. There wasn’t any particular genre of sound or music in mind. My goal with this project was to create unique sounds that are fun, creative, and interactive, while still being playable and useful in a variety of genres.

Metaphysical Fabrications – Visuals and Sound

This new video covers some of the visual aspects of Metaphysical Function and the sound design process used to create the sounds in the Cool Shapes category of Metaphysical Fabrications. These sounds were created with a focus on the visual aspects of Metaphysical Function and were initially made without listening to the audio. I tuned these sounds to make cool shapes in the phase scope first, and then went back to design the sound further after I got an interesting shape. This was a really fun and interesting way to create sound.

Metaphysical Fabrications

contortDistort announces the release of Metaphysical Fabrications, its first independent sound library. Metaphysical Fabrications is a free set of 52 new snapshots, 30 new samples, and 9 new features for Reaktor’s Metaphysical Function.

Metaphysical Fabrications is a unique and creative collection of 52 evolving smooth and complex soundscapes, pulsing and arrhythmic textures, heavy and raw creations, and swirling shaped drones.

New features include the ability to play the Resochord like a musical instrument via MIDI note input, providing faster and engaging control of each comb filter’s pitch; the ability to create chord progressions, with the Resochord via Metaphysical Function’s slider automation or via MIDI note input; Oscillator trim; Stereo input toggle; Sample vs Input crossfade
; Pitch bend and Mod Wheel control; and re-triggering of the Sampler and Slider Automation via MIDI note input.

Metaphysical Functions was one of the first professional sound design projects I ever worked on, marking the beginning of my career as a professional sound designer. For my first independent release, I thought it would be great to revisit my beginnings as a sound designer and release it for free to the Reaktor community.

Even though Metaphysical Function came out a while ago, I still find it unique, creative, fun, and most of all, I think it still sounds great. I approached making these sounds from the perspective of pure sound design and letting my creative juices flow. When making these sounds, there wasn’t any genre or category of sound in mind, just to make sounds that are fun and inspiring to listen to and play with.

Square Circles

“Square Circles” is an audio visual example of drones and fun shapes I’ve been making in Metaphysical Function. All Reaktor users will soon be able to get their hands on these visuals and sounds. Stay tuned!

Flutter Strum

“Flutter Strum” is a new example of some of my recent sound design works processing the Minibrute analog synth with Reaktor’s Metaphysical Function. The plucks and the gliding strum sound is the Minibrute being ring modulated with Reaktor’s geiger generator.
